Turns out, about half of 200 Boston teenagers surveyed in an informal poll say pop star Rihanna had it coming – she deserved to be bitten and punched by her boyfriend, Chris Brown, until blood filled her mouth and splattered all over the front seat.
The kids, it turns out, are not alright.
Forty-six percent of kids 12 to 19 years old said Rihanna “was responsible for the incident,” and more than four out of ten teens said fighting “was a routine occurrence” between partners.
But these ignoramuses are just products of their convoluted society – one infiltrated by crazed talking heads excusing, if not outright promoting, a culture of victim blaming. These teenagers’ views, sadly enough, reflect the anonymous and vitriolic opinions of message boards scattered across the Internet.
Look at almost any of the thousands of Chris Brown-Rihanna stories written over past month and you’ll see comment after comment saying, in so many words: Chris Brown was wrong, but Rihanna should know her man’s limits. Translation: Rihanna deserved to get the stuffing kicked out of her. Nice job, Chris. Score one for the boys.

There’s also been a glut of people criticizing Rihanna for reuniting with the guy who smashed her head against a car window. Most of us have never been in that position, and we should remember that it’s not as simple as it seems. And let’s not pretend that Rihanna getting back together with Brown makes his despicable act any better.
HateOnMe wasn’t immune to the victim-blaming, abuse-promoting agents of doom. In a February hate, a reader named Nancy summed up her thoughts on the Rihanna-Brown situation succinctly: “Big deal. Bitch had it coming.”
May god bless you, Nancy. May he shine his light upon you and give you peace. You’re going to need it, you ingrate.

I’ve talked with a few teenage boys who go to great lengths to express their disgust for spousal abuse. It’s inexcusable and unforgivable, they say. If it happened to their sister, the abuser would be in a morgue by sunrise. But, they continue, you never know what Rihanna said to make Chris flip out. You just don’t.
When they’re told that they are victim blaming, they deny it vehemently and huff and puff. No matter how they slice it, saying anything besides, “Chris Brown was wrong for hitting Rihanna,” is giving people wiggle room for some good old-fashioned victim blaming.
The teens I’ve talked to must be adept at faking righteous indignation, if the Boston survey is even remotely accurate. Please, for the love of the future, stop taking your cues from cable news and the dens of brainlessness that are Internet discussion boards.

I had to read that same report for work- and can’t say that I was surprised. I have been hearing a lot of muffled side bar conversations about what kind of crazy chick Rihanna most likely is… that she probably likes abusive relationships… how do we really know how she treats him. The only disgrace Rihanna has shown is in apparently rejoining with Chris Brown. But her going back to Chris Brown does not mean that she is ASKING to get her ass beat the second she questions him– love is not simple or easily defined. Cycles however are. It is clear the Rihanna is stuck in an abusive cycle with a man she truly cares for. Maybe Chris Brown is a beautiful person with mental issues and needs to seek rehabilitation asp (as everyone seems to want to believe)- well so is Rihanna. Instead of the media focusing on how sad and weak Rihanna is for taking Chris Brown back- they should focus on the CYCLE of abusive behavior-Why do so many women stay in them (maybe cause they know society will blame them anyway –hmmm) and How can women and men who are in abusive relationships find rehabilitation so they can stay together in a HEALTHY relationship if that’s what they want- & if it’s at all possible. The scary part is how young they both are– Rihanna is the victim of the story & still is because as she continues to stay with him she continues to abuse herself. These teenagers now are getting pregnant, getting stds and getting their asses beat all because they have NO IDEA what love is– makes you really wonder what their parents are like. Ok this was a messy rant but still point is they BOTH need help- & maybe if society’s perception wasn’t always to ask “well what did she do” when a woman gets raped or beat up than maybe more women would feel strong enough to end their abusive cycles.
